5 May 2014: Festival of Orange Ribbons along the river Waal

Deel deze pagina

Rondje Pontje 8
The 5th of May is called Liberation Day in the Netherlands. That day people all over the country celebrate the ending of the Second World War and the liberation from German occupation. A new and spectacular event will be held in the two municipalities of Neerijnen and Maasdriel on either side of the river Waal: the Festival of Orange Ribbons.

What's the plan?
On the dikes along the river Waal a 5 mile long Orange Ribbon will be held by hundreds of people. Dutch Military Engineers from nearby Hedel will than bring the orange ribbon by boat from the south to the north bank.

Dropping
Four paratroopers of the paragroup Holland will jump for a 'memorial leap', dressed in uniforms of the Allied Forces from the Second World War. With these jumps the many women will be commemorated that were killed during the airborne operations in 1944. The paratroopers will land in the vicinity of the Brickyard in Heesselt, at Fort Sint Andries Heerewaarden and in the floodplain near Rossum. The Genie from Hedel than brings the orange ribbon by boat from the south to the north bank.
At several places along the route on both sides of the river Waal brass bands and choirs will provide musical entertainment.

Unique spectacle
Thanks to the cooperation of the province, municipalities, companies in the region, village representatives, schools and residents this event promises to be something very special. A unique and binding moment celebrating the freedom that is often taken for granted.

In the Media
The NOS (Dutch Broadcasting Company) and several foreign stations such as BBC, ARD and CNN have been approached to attend.

Symbolic start Project Rondje Pontje
This event also marks a symbolic start of a project called "Rondje Pontje Waal ", which can be freely translated as ‘Ferry Rounds’. This project, supported by the Province of Gelderland, aims to enliven the banks of the Waal in order to stimulate tourism and economic development, from which people and companies can benefit.
